Diamond Carat

Diamond Carat

A diamond carat is often misunderstood. Most people think bigger is always better, but it's not just about weight. In this article, you'll learn what carat really means, how it affects size and price, and how to find the perfect balance between look, feel, and budget.

What Is Diamond Carat?

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, not its size or dimensions. 1 carat (ct) = 0.2 grams (approximately as a paperclip or aspirin tablet). A diamond's physical size depends on its shape and cut, not just carat weight.

Carat vs. Size: Not Always the Same

Two diamonds with the same carat weight can appear different in size depending on their shape and how they're cut. For example, A 1ct round diamond is about 6.5mm in diameter.
A 1ct oval diamond appears larger (wider surface area). A diamond cut too deep may look smaller from the top, even if it's heavier.

How Carat Affects Price

Diamond price increases exponentially, not linearly, with carat weight.

Carat     Approx. Price Jump (All else equal)
0.90ct → 1.00ct ~15–25% higher
1.00ct → 1.50ct   ~50–70% higher
1.50ct → 2.00ct ~60–90% higher

This is because larger diamonds are rarer. There's high demand at "magic sizes" (e.g., 0.50ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct)

Choosing a Carat

Here's how to maximize size and value:
Buy shy of magic numbers – A 0.90ct diamond can look almost the same as 1.00ct but cost much less.

Prioritize cut – A well-cut 0.80ct diamond may sparkle more than a poorly cut 1.00ct

Choose elongated shapes – Oval, pear, and marquise appear larger than round or cushion shapes.

Go with thinner bands – A slim ring band can make the diamond appear bigger.

Carat Weight vs. Total Carat Weight
Individual Carat Weight (ICW) - Refers to the main center stone
Total Carat Weight (TCW) - Total of all diamonds in a ring or jewelry piece

For example:

A halo ring may have a 0.75ct center + 0.25ct side stones = 1.00 TCW. Be sure to ask whether carat refers to the center stone or the total combined weight.

How Much Carat Should I Choose?

Here's a general guide based on hand size, ring design, and budget:

Ring Style  Ideal Carat Range
Solitaire (simple band) 0.50–1.50 ct
Halo (accent stones)   0.30–1.00 ct
Three-stone ring 0.75–2.00+ ct

Also consider Hand/finger size (smaller fingers = smaller diamond looks bigger), Lifestyle (larger diamonds may snag or be impractical for daily wear), and budget (balance carat with cut, clarity, and color)

  • And finally,
  • Carat measures weight, not size.
  • Cut and shape affect the visual size
  • Prices jump at popular sizes
